Samsung SyncMaster 930B
I recently made a purchase of a new monitor, a 19" Samsung SyncMaster 930B. This series of monitor is very nice. With a bright enough backlight (300 cd/m2), relatively high contrast ratio (700:1), many reviews of this monitor say it's "Nothing special". While it's priced a good 10%-20% less than the competition's monitors of the same size (excluding those super generic companies such as MAG and Westinghouse, which I wouldn't buy or trust) the monitor is a great no-frills solution. But I will be taking it back, the main reason being at 19" and 1280x1024 resolution, I find the resolution disappointing. It's basically a 17" monitor with bigger pixels. And I have looked around, it turns out that this is actually a common place with 19" TFT monitors. They are typically no better resolution than a 17" Monitor, making them a very poor purchase. However, the Samsung seems to be a very solid manufacturer, and although the monitor doesn't pivot or have adjustable height, I honestly don't see why it would need to. It tilts, after all, what more do you really need. So I will be returning it and exchanging the 19" monitor for a 20.1" Samsung SyncMaster 204B.
The 204B is only slightly larger but has a 1600x1200 resolution that adds considerably more screen realestate. With 176 more pixels in height, and 320 more pixels in width - but only an extra inch in monitor dimensions. However, this monitor costs nearly $200 more. But I think it's worth the extra cash. And unlike the competitors monitors at this size, the Samsung is not widescreen. LG makes a 20.1" with similar resolution, but it's a bit dimmer at 259 cd/m2, and considerably slower with 16ms response time (vs the Samsung's 5ms in the 204B), and only has a 400:1 contrast ratio (where the Samsung is 800:1) which is quite surprising considering the insane contrast ratios that LG has been boasting in their other monitor models. Samsung seems to be the best monitor for the money, a bit cheaper, a trusted brand with a good picture. No frills, maybe not the most flexibility but it's a reliable and trustable display.
